Graveyard Keeper 2 is a single-player medieval graveyard management RPG in which you play the Grand Inquisitor. You manage a graveyard, automate production with the undead, rebuild a ruined Town, and lead a zombie army against a zombie apocalypse — while turning all of it into profit.
It is the sequel to Lazy Bear Games' 2018 original, published again by tinyBuild, and it launches on September 22, 2026. The pitch on the official Steam page is that it is "the grotesque sequel that's deeper than six feet, and more unhinged than ever".
What are the five pillars of the game?
The official store page lists five things you do. They are worth reading in the developer's own order, because that order reflects the intended loop:
- Manage your own medieval graveyard.
- Automate your production like never before.
- Lead your zombie army into battle and fortify the Town against the undead.
- Rebuild The Town and milk its residents for maximum profits.
- Experience a world full of unhinged humour, grotesque characters and a twisted story.
Player-defined tags on Steam add useful texture: Sandbox, Building, Capitalism, Agriculture, Crafting, Automation, Medieval, Dark Humor, Dark Comedy, Post-apocalyptic, Zombies, Farming Sim and Life Sim. That combination — automation plus farming plus dark comedy — is the clearest short description of what the game feels like to play.
How the graveyard works
The graveyard is still the heart of the game, but it has a new management layer. Burials remain your core duty and your core income, and in the sequel the graveyard sits in "a peaceful and beautiful area outside the city walls, near the Keeper's base" rather than being a distant chore.
The new layer is modules. Through the Technology Tree you unlock unique graveyard modules that can be placed at graveyards, and each module provides space for different useful objects: tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments and graves. The developers also added many new grave designs and decorations so the space can be made genuinely personal. Full breakdown on the graveyard guide.
Harvesting feeds all of it. The official description says you harvest "as much flora, fauna, and human remains as you can" to build machinery, automate production and expand. Nothing in the world is only scenery.
How automation works
Automation is the biggest structural change from the original game. Zombies now do more than use workbenches — they operate semi-automatic machines in underground factories, as long as minimum working conditions are provided, and the sequel introduces conveyor-belt factories as a completely new mechanic.
The design intent is stated plainly: your undead workers "take care of the heavy lifting behind the scenes", letting you "transform local efforts into a scalable and profitable operation". The practical loop is that you stop doing a task yourself and start feeding the system that does it. See the zombie automation guide.
How the Town works
The Town was a locked, rumoured location in the original game — visible only as a guarded gate and an unobtainable Town Pass. In the sequel it is open, nearly abandoned, and mostly overrun by townsfolk who turned into zombies.
You reclaim it district by district, then bring each area back to life by restoring comfortable housing, reopening cafés and shops, and rebuilding local infrastructure. Your choices matter in a concrete way: restored buildings "create new markets for your goods and unlock valuable products and resources for you to buy". Details and building priorities are on the town restoration guide.
How combat works
Combat is new to the series as a full pillar. You lead an undead army into battle to save the Kingdom, building towers and fortifications, crafting powerful armour and weapons, and arming and training your "not-so-smart troops".
The twist the developers highlight is thematic: with proper defences, people can live alongside zombies fine, and zombies may even become a tourist attraction. The stated real problem is "hopelessness… and a lack of consumer goods" — which is why combat and Town restoration are really the same campaign. Equipment is covered on the weapons and armor guide.
What changed visually
The original Graveyard Keeper was stylised pixel art with dynamic shadows and volumetric lighting bolted on. Graveyard Keeper 2 is built in full 3D behind a fixed camera angle, which unlocked a genuinely moving sun, proper night-time dynamic shadows, wind-reactive forests and grass, deep volumetric fog, and a custom water shader.
The developers also built a dedicated construction kit for the Town so every architectural detail could be swapped and customised, letting the Town read as dense, varied and layered — ancient foundations under a later medieval settlement.
How progression works
Progression runs through the Technology Tree, which returns in familiar form, now paired with a new talent system. The stated goal of the talent system is to make the grind more enjoyable, and the developers have said plainly that there will be less grinding this time.
Beyond the tree, progression is driven by the feedback loop between systems: a bigger Town produces more corpses, a more prosperous and more sinful Town produces better corpses, and better corpses produce better zombies. See the technology tree guide.
What is still unknown
Anything numeric. Resource counts, recipe lists, module costs, army limits, tower statistics and talent effects are all unconfirmed until the game ships and can be tested.
